Mary, I use Blogger and am almost at the 1 year anniversary! You can pick a name for the "address" but then have your title that shows up at the top be something else. You can edit that part. my url is sharonshaffer, but the title is Sherbert's Creations. I'll send your a "friend" request, and can privately email you some screen shots or sites that might help you.

Cathy,
Thank you so much for taking the time to do all that for me!
I am going to try it. The problem has been when I turn everything on and try to boot up it runs the disk check and I can't get it to stop. then it freezes. It says to hit any key to stop the check, and I have maybe even a little more FORCEFULLY than I should!LOL
But I will try the F8 key and maybe that will trigger something. I have had it off now for about 3 days again,so maybe I can sneak up on it!

I was thinking about using Blogger for my Blog, so it sounds like from everyone that that is the way to go?

I am so bad at this stuff...but you are never to old to learn...right!?
I can't even come up with a good name! My daughters suggested "cooperville" after the puppy...but that isn't going to make people think craft site and stamps. I figure I have time, since my daughter said she would rather I not set up the blog using her laptop. I don't think it would matter, but I need to respect her wishes since it is her laptop.
although if the site tracks the ip address I guess it would matter who's computor I am using.
Cathy I will e-mail you later today so that we can get each others e-mails.
I love reading your comments you make me laugh with how you describe things!! You should have your own column!
We have seen a lot of child psyc...my oldest daughter is schziophrenic. Dx at the age of 10. Very young for the onset.
But she is doing well compared to others with the dx.
She is unemployed again, trying to find work but as like so many others even without a dx and "normal" it is hard to find work.

Well I hope no-one minds me asking all this advice.?
This is the only forum where I have felt so welcome!
And this Thanksgiving I am grateful and Thankful for all of you here!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

P.S. Feel better Sharon! You need to take care of yourself first before you worry about all the rest of the "stuff".!

Yeah, we love our dogs, and Katie is quite the pistol LOL. The shepherd is almost 12 years old - his birthday is New Year's Day - and he's got a degenerative problem now that is really starting to get bad, but he's still a wonderful guy. Totally patient with the pup.

And I'm not a computer whiz. I only know about this stuff because I had a defective hard drive and spent many hours on the phone with customer support and wrote things down as they walked me through all of this. Ultimately, I got all new guts under the keyboard -- thank God, under warranty LOL. But I was ever so glad I had backed everything up on Carbonite ;).

(Everything except a tetradrive full of pictures ;( -- THAT crashed and so far, no luck getting my pix back. That is a kicker.)

I used AVG for a long time - loved it, but switched to Avast! because I really needed something idiot proof to tell me if it was working and up to date. It has a little icon on the bottom of my screen that moves when it's working and turns a different color when it isn't or when there's a problem.

Feel better Sharon!!! Don't feel badly about not working -- get thee well and be well enough to enjoy the day tomorrow. The paper will still be there!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Feel better Sharon!

Cathy - WOW! Those are cute pictures! I love that Shepherd and that they're all so sweet with each other. You're quite a computer wiz!

Mary, I use AVG for my free virus protection and have for many, many years. I HATE Norton and have had nothing but it causing issues on systems in the past. It takes up a lot of unnecessary resources to do a very background task.

PayPal is the way to go! Something like Blogger is very simple to set up so I would recommend that.

Have a great day ladies! I've got lots on my plate today so that we can all have lots on our plates tomorrow and Friday! :)

Very happy to hear that Jack is doing better!
Been very under the weather here, and feeling guilty that I haven't done any posting (or blogging)! But, have not been up to making anything!

Hey everyone, sorry to clutter the whole group page with this but I don’t know who Mary is LOL and I want to give her some quick things to try with her computer. So you can all skip it, but if you see Mary, she's having breakfast with me LOL.

Mary, these are some things you can try – none of them will do anything bad to your computer and they might get it to the point where you can actually get it running and then be able to get rid of the virus. Might not fix it completely, but it might get it running enough for you to limp through the weekend with it.

I think you can tell the computer to skip check disk. Does it give you that option? If it does, then what you want to do is boot it up (not out) in safe mode and then set your mad dogs on the virus. (Run a virus scan but download new virus definitions first…. Critical.)

If it doesn't give you the option as soon as you boot for Safe Mode, you can try what is known as a hot boot. Unless your hard drive is toast, that should get you up and running in Safe Mode.

To do that, turn the computer off and leave it off for a few minutes – like make a cup of tea 10 minutes. Then turn it on and start tapping the F8 key. Just keep tapping the key, actually pressing it down, not just tapping on it, and do it quickly, like twice a second, over and over until the system boots and you see a screen come up.

You should get a screen that says something like Windows Advanced Options Menu. If you can, chose Safe Mode and it should start up. If you get a dialog box asking if you want to RUN Safe Mode or Open in Safe mode, say yes and proceed.

This is good for pretty much all Windows software from Window 95 right through Vista. However, they are all a little bit different and some need you to start tapping as soon as you turn it on, others need you to wait a few seconds, like 10 seconds max before you start. Sometimes, depending on what version of windows you have, if you begin tapping the F8 key too soon you’ll get an error message that says "keyboard error". If that happens, turn it off for a few minutes, restart, and then wait about 10 seconds (which is a long time, actually), before you press F8 again.

Another option if you can get it going is to see if you have what’s known as System Repair on your computer. It might have come with it preinstalled on your hard drive or it might be on a recovery disk. If it’s preinstalled, if you search in program help or control panel help, you'll find it. If not, it would be on the Windows installation disc that came with your computer, and it's in the System Recovery Options menu. This is the disc that you were sure you would never need and so you don't have a clue where it is now.

If you don't have Startup Repair or if you do but it doesn't work, go to System Restore to change what is known as the Restore Point.

The Restore Point is a record of all of your system configurations for an earlier date and time. It should give you prompts to get through the screens, just be sure to choose a time that is before you got the virus. It will reset all of the program and utility files to where they were at that point in time. It won't affect WP files or email, just program and utility files. If the virus corrupted a program or utility file (sounds like it might have),this might help you do an end run around it. Choose a restore point for a few weeks ago and set that. Then immediately update your virus definitions and run a virus scan.

If you can't even get into it to do that but you can run the computer in safe mode - that is, if you can by-pass chkdsk and get to a place that lets you choose safe mode or what's known as a dot prompt - a place where you can type in a command - do that and type in this: rstrui.exe then press ENTER. That should get you in. Once you're in, check for the virus, since it's still in there.

If you need some excellent free virus software, there are a few good ones out there but I favor Avast! because it updates the virus definitions daily and it monitors 24/7. It has saved me from more than a few messes. ;) You can download it here: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I prefer this to either McAfee or Norton, plus I like the price. (Why pay for virus protection when you can use that money to buy stamps and paper???)

These dogs are therapy dogs for DH's medical practice. He's a child psychiatrist. Treats a few adults as well, and they love the dogs too.

Yesterday Katie took her show on the road. She found a tiny space where our fence connects with the fence of the day care next door that she could squeeze through and off she went to play with the kids. This little girl is going to give me a heart attack.

Those three dogs are the same breed - all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and those are three of the four colors they come in. We have all four - here is our fourth girl, our little rescue gal, Elizabeth... the foster dog that never left. ;)

This is my fave picture of Toughie. Handsome little boy... and sweet as sweet can be.

Mary, if you are using blogger, I have a couple of quick hints that might help you. I could spend some time with you on the phone on the weekend - Saturday AM would be good as DH is going to a funeral of a Masonic brother and I am ... NOT LOL. (I don't know the gentleman or his family and begged off. Too much to do!)

If that works for you, there must be a way to email each other privately so we can trade phone numbers and talk about Kate behind her back LOL. (Just good stuff Kate... ) I've got a brand new store that I am just setting up as well, so we can compare "how to" notes
